a somewhat depressing post... =p Everything's going fine - *touches wood*. lol. I've been in a happy mood for the last two days. It must be all the chocolate (
m&m's go crunch crunch crunch - lmao, I can be such an idiot! xD) and the thought of seeing
Carson Kressley and naked women again on Monday night 8:00pm. HAHAHAHA!! woot!! I have such a deep fascination for makeover shows - perhaps its the pleasure of seeing lovely clothes upon gorgeous persons (oh gosh, do I sound like a closet pevert?) and/or perhaps it's the idea that an "ugly" person can transform into a beautiful/handsome person with a touch of makeup, a snip of the hair and clothes that fit snugly and magnificently upon one's body. Oh yes, it's a wonderful feeling. Such shows like
How to Look Good Naked,
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (why did it get axed????!!!!) and
Trinny & Susannah - they're my Gods and Goddesses; yes they are. *smiles* ^-^
Speaking about transformations and change, these images that I am about to post will definitely question you to think about all things and issues in relation to the continuous changing attitudes and beliefs towards racism, prejudice, discrimination and identity...?? I've been studying visual images lately and my every-cool but somewhat intimidating lecturer introduced me to these wonderful, fabolous and mind-boggling advertisements for the clothing brand:
United Colours of Benneton? Have you ever heard of the brand before? Perhaps you've seen these advertisements before. At first I thought, what relevance does this have to do with clothes? What issues are being raised up? What do you think they're trying to say?
I'll leave the questions unanswered because I think that the answers will depend on your perception, belief and values.
And on a sidenote, with the Beijing Olympics coming up, I hope people will stop commenting and making racist remarks towards my ethnicity and towards my family's country. Every country has its positives and negatives. Every person is different. But this does not mean that judgement should be made in terms of stereotypes, skin colour, culture, language, religion, values and ways of living and viewing the world. SAY NO TO RACISM.

Now, I have a friend who would often criticise my heavy-money-wasting on magazines when most of it's just advertising prints. Now, magazines aren't money wasting are they?? No, I think definetly not. lol. But then again, my friend is not slightly interested in fashion - yes, would you believe it? - but she's awesome nonetheless. Well, I absolutely love fashion advertisements and that's part of the joy in magazines. I love scrutinizing every angle shot, each model's pose/stance, the layout, the set and of course, the styling of the clothes and accessories. Oh, fashion advertisements can be so wonderful. ^^ And the newest advertisement campaign of
Ports 1961 Spring/Summer 2008 collection is one of the most delightful with its inspiration coming from the beauty and style of
Africa.
[^] I love the use of shadows in this photograph.
I first noted Ports 1961 whilst reading about their 'Organic Arts' Collection back in the October 2007 Issue of JESSICA. Their Organic Arts collection were pretty much comprised of accessories made from organic materials such as wood and cotton and my gosh, they were one of the most beautiful pieces I had seen. As you can see the photo above, the model is holding a wooden clutch - part of the Organic Arts collection - in her hands.
[^] I just adore this outfit - the whole outfit but unfortunately, to much of my dismay, I just can't imagine myself wearing this outfit at all unless I lose 30 kg and wear 10 inch heels to make my legs look slender and long. ><"
[^] There is something about this photograph - the bare landscape/background and the flow of the colours is just so lovely. The dress seems to blend in with the background and yet, there's this contrast to it where it stands out...gosh, I sound so contradicting , what am I thinking and how do I describe this feeling that I have of this photo?.... It's just a strong and beautiful photograph.
[^] It was the bright white of the outfit against the dark background that captured me. It just brings the outfit out and as I was staring at it, I noticed the splendor of the tree. Look at those carvings/work of nature (or digital tech) upon that tree.
[^] Isn't this outfit just so classic? Timeless? For some reason, I love her pose. It's got a flair to it.
[^] The capturing of the dress is terrific and such great use of lighting so that the dress just seems to glow and shine in such beautiful shades of gold! However, this photograph reminds me of another advertisement that I had seen before, I can't remember which brand it was but yeah, there's a familiarity to this photo and I don't think that's a good thing to have as it might seem copy-cat...
[^] Often, I find myself attracted to eccentric photographs but I found this set quite simple, natural and ultimately, exotic which is what I liked about this collection of photos.
I wanted to say so much about these sets of photos; what impressions they give me, the feelings but as you know, I'm terrible with words for I just don't seem to know how express myself unless it's via photos/images. So once again, I'm just going to let the photographs speak for themselves. ^^ Meanwhile, there's more to this set of photos so check out the site if you wish. They're beautiful captures.
Lots of love, Cotton Candy.

The jukebox plays my song:
"His eye is on the sparrow" {eng}
Lauren Hill & Yolanda Adams
"GET ME DEMARCHELIER!!"
...
"I HAVE PATRICK!!"
Oh! If only I had Patrick! No, not for any sort of intimate fantasies or sexual pleasure. lol! No. But for idoling and if I had him, I would definitely have him teach me all about photography, for me to become his disciple and for him to become my master. =D
If you've watched
'The Devil wears Prada' - you're probably familiar with those two lines of dialogue - where Miranda Priestly (
Meryl Streep) tells Andy (
Anne Hathaway), "Get me Demarchelier!" leaving her utterly confused, and the first assistant Emily replying, "I have Patrick!" And if you love photography (like me ^-^), you'll most likely know
Patrick Demarchelier, a world-renowned fashion photographer who has worked for the likes of
Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Mademoiselle, Rolling Stone and
GQ. Oh, forget about having him - instead I want to be him!! ^.~ And you'll see why - he shoots amazing photos, especially black and white photographs which I absolutely love. I recommend checking out his gallery at his
website. ^^ You all know that I love photography and I figured out that it was time to make a post on an inspiring photographer, one of the many whom I admire so much. And so, this post on photography/photographers shall be the first of the many to come. ^^...And I think to myself, I wouldn't mind becoming an art stylist/art director too...^^
Well, there are tens and hundreds of Demarchelier's photos that I want to post but if I do, I'm sure I'll lag your internet and that would be horrid, wouldn't it? lol. So I'll just give you a small insight into his portfolio, selecting a few of my favourites. =]
This photograph featuring model:
Natalia Vodianova was shot for
Vanity Fair (01/05). I remember browsing randomly through Demarchelier's website and I came across this photograph. It was to be the second black and white photograph that I would adore forever. I don't know my photography techniques (but one day I will learn! ^^) however what I do know is that he has captured something so delicate, fragile, beautiful and whimsical all at once. The smooth, flowy material (chiffon? silk?) against the ancient, crumbling balcony makes it even so much more beautiful.
Another black and white photo. Gosh, if only I had learnt ballet when my mum had told me to at the age of 6 and perhaps, I would be able to place my feet into that position above (I know there's a name to this stance...).
Who doesn't love
Gemma Ward? I love her so and doesn't she look angelic here? So innocent as well. I guess that's why the shoot was titled
La citee des anges (also featuring
Du Juan). And we all love refridgerators because it stores wonderful food inside. lol! ^.~ This was shot for
French Vogue 10/05. Naomi Campbell - one of the most talked about supermodels - infamous and yet, famous simultaneously. Nevermind about that. She looks gorgeous in such a simple and plain outfit: black turtleneck and white pants. And in her arms, a lovely boy. This photo makes me feel so warm and tender inside.
Shot for American Vogue 12/04 and titled Paradise. love, love, love , LOVE!! Wouldn't I love to have her body, wear that blue dress, stand on white soft sand and have the sparkling water sweep me off my feet. Yes, that would be a touch of paradise. Ahhhh, definitely. =D
Du Juan - one of the famous chinese models. She's gorgeous and I love her so! (Although I don't recommend smoking. )
I love these two black and white photos (above and below). The above photo was the first black and white photo in Demarchelier's portfolio that I fell in love with. The rigidity, the stances, the compactness (is there such a word?) and just everything - this photo hit me. You know you love a photo when it just hits you and captures your eyes and heart. It just hits you.
And below, featuring Du Juan once again in a shoot titled La citee des anges for French Vogue 10/05 (also featuring Gemma Ward). How gorgeous is she and that dress.!! My third most favourite black and white photo. At first I thought of her running away but then I looked closely and I thought she hears that her lover has returned home after a long time, perhaps due to war or business. She runs out of her room and down the corridors of the large house as seen below in the photo, running to meet her lover who is waiting at the door. And the man waiting at the door, with a suitcase at his feet just smiles tenderly. Aaah!! I'm too mushy!! =p
Okay, so I said a few photos. . .
I lied. =p
Hugs and kisses, Cotton Candy
